About Aruma

Aruma is a technology consultancy built on deep, hands-on engineering experience — spanning software, AI, and hardware. It's a small practice by design, aimed at giving smaller businesses direct access to expertise that's usually reserved for much larger engagements.

Good engineering shouldn't be reserved for companies big enough to afford a full team.

Behind Aruma

I've been building software and systems since the 1980s — starting with a Commodore 64 and BASIC, then Turbo Pascal, C, and x86 assembler on early PCs. I got my hands on Linux in the early 1990s, and spent my university years deep in Unix systems programming, computer architecture, and compiler design.

My professional career moved through internet and telecoms software, then into finance — building trading systems in Java, then real-time systems on the FIX protocol, and eventually researching how FPGAs could push trading systems to their performance limits. Since 2013 I've consulted across government health, insurance, banking, gaming, early-stage ventures, and — when it was still new — large language models. My current work is building the payments core of a green-fields banking platform, integrating directly with central bank clearing systems.

Outside client work, embedded computing has stayed a constant hobby — Arduino, ESP32, and ESP8266 projects, PCB design, and physical prototypes built on CNC mills and 3D printers.

Aruma exists to put that range of experience directly to work for businesses that don't usually get access to it — from farms that could benefit from a simple sensor network, to founders who need a technical partner, to growing businesses that want enterprise-grade engineering without an enterprise-sized team.
